Hasta Nakshatra

The deity is Savitur — the Sun in his generative, life-giving aspect, the one who lights the world before formal dawn. The symbol is the hand, sometimes a fist; the yoni is the buffalo, thick and patient. The Moon rules this nakshatra. She has hands that change what they touch — and the rest of her body is a vehicle for those hands.

She is the friend who fixes your necklace, your relationship problem, and your dinner in one afternoon. The one whose embroidery turns into a business. The one who learned massage in three weeks and now everyone wants to be her client. Hasta has hands the way other nakshatras have eyes. The Moon gives her intuition; Savitur gives her the generative current; the buffalo gives her stamina. She works.

The motif that keeps appearing in her life: she becomes the one people bring problems to be made into objects. Broken jewelry, hurting bodies, badly-edited manuscripts, complicated relationships — she has a way of placing her hands on a thing and making it become a smaller, finished thing. Some people swear she's a witch. They are not entirely wrong; Vedic tradition calls Hasta the nakshatra of sleight-of-hand and magic.
